Cold War and Late 20th Century

The Project Curator will lead a five-year research project that will focus on IWM’s underexplored collections relating to innovations and developments in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) from the First World War to the present day. The project will examine how conflict motivates and accelerates progress in this area and will highlight how the impact and legacy of innovations and developments in STEM have been transferred and repurposed from military to civilian use. The postholder will interrogate IWM’s collections, unearthing meaningful and relevant stories and material from the past which will inspire ground-breaking advancements in STEM today and create a safer world for the future. This pivotal role is sponsored by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, a charitable organisation.

The project will surface previously under-researched material at IWM, providing significant insight through exhibits, photographs, art, posters, film, documents, private papers, printed materials and the sound archive. Through collaboration and knowledge-exchange with the Lloyd’s Register Foundation and IWM's existing stakeholders, networks and public engagement platforms, the project will reach new, diverse and global audiences. The postholder will be expected to work with IWM’s Head of Partnerships to foster and nurture national and international partnerships and will be the primary advocate for the project and its outcomes.

The postholder will apply and develop knowledge and skills for the benefit of our core and developmental audiences and put forward imaginative ideas for exhibitions, events, digital content and other elements of public programme. They will contribute to a working culture that is responsive, collaborative and committed, and an environment that welcomes curiosity and creativity.
